Breaking the Chains: Russia Takes Steps to Combat Forced Marriage

Forced marriage is a pervasive issue in Russia, one that continues to affect numerous individuals across the country. This practice, which involves individuals being coerced or forced into marrying against their will, can have devastating consequences for those involved.

In Russia, forced marriage tends to be more prevalent in certain regions, particularly in rural areas where traditional practices and beliefs are deeply ingrained. This can make it difficult for individuals, especially women, to speak out against forced marriages for fear of repercussions from their families or communities.

One of the main reasons behind forced marriage in Russia is the belief that marriage is a way to strengthen family ties and consolidate wealth. In some cases, individuals are forced into marriage to uphold societal norms and expectations, regardless of their own desires or feelings.

Victims of forced marriage often have limited options for seeking help or escaping their situations. The lack of support services and legal protections for individuals facing forced marriage can make it even more challenging for victims to break free from these harmful situations.

Despite ongoing efforts by activists and organizations to raise awareness about forced marriage in Russia, the practice continues to persist. More needs to be done to create safe spaces for individuals to seek help and support if they are facing forced marriage, as well as increased education and advocacy to combat harmful traditional practices that perpetuate this issue.

It is crucial for individuals in Russia to know their rights and have access to resources and support if they are facing forced marriage. By working together to address the root causes of forced marriage and provide assistance to those in need, we can help put an end to this harmful practice and ensure that individuals can make choices about their own lives and futures.

In 2013, I posted a YouTube video decrying child marriage showcasing her story and her experience in being forced into marriage contracts, which quickly went viral and prompted coverage of Yemen’s continued practice of child marriage. She managed to influence the comprehensive national dialogue conference in Yemen to pass and apply a law of criminalizing the marriage of minors under the age of 18 , and that is after launching her first video to rally the international media to denounce the marriage of minors. Below are highlights of her main not limited to her achievement during the awareness campaign she held throughout herlife:
