Child Marriage: A Hidden Crisis in the United States

Child marriage is a concerning issue that continues to persist in the United States, despite efforts to address it. It is a problem that affects the lives of young girls, casting a shadow on their future prospects and well-being. This practice, although often rooted in cultural and religious traditions, raises significant concerns regarding child rights, consent, and overall societal progress.

The term “child marriage” refers to the union of individuals under the age of 18. While many assume child marriages only occur in developing countries, it is important to recognize that it remains a problem within our own borders. In the United States alone, thousands of young girls are forced into marriages against their will, often deprived of education, personal freedom, and the opportunity to fulfill their potential.

The causes of child marriage in the United States are multifaceted. In some cases, cultural practices and traditions play a significant role. Families may uphold norms where marriage at a young age is believed to protect a girl’s honor, ensure financial security, or align with religious beliefs. Poverty and lack of access to education can also contribute to child marriages, as families may see marriage as a means to alleviate their financial burdens or secure their daughters’ futures.

The consequences of child marriage are profound and far-reaching. Girls who are married at a young age face numerous challenges, including limited educational opportunities, increased vulnerability to domestic violence, and higher risk of physical and mental health issues. They are often unable to advocate for themselves or make decisions about their own lives. Instead, they are thrust into adult responsibilities without the necessary support or knowledge to navigate them successfully.

Addressing child marriage requires a multi-faceted approach. Legal reforms are crucial in setting the minimum age for marriage at 18, with no exceptions. Educating communities and raising awareness about the consequences of child marriage is essential to challenge deeply ingrained cultural norms and practices. Empowering girls through education and providing support networks can also help ensure they have the necessary skills to protect themselves and make informed choices.

Efforts to combat child marriage must involve collaboration at all levels of society. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), governmental agencies, and community leaders must work together to increase resources, dismantle harmful practices, and provide support to those affected by child marriage. Additionally, engaging in dialogues surrounding human rights, gender equality, and consent can contribute to changing societal perceptions and norms.

It is important to acknowledge that child marriage is not an isolated issue but rather a symptom of deeper social, cultural, and economic problems. By addressing the root causes and creating an environment where young girls can grow and thrive, we can take significant steps toward eradicating this harmful practice and ensuring a brighter future for all. Let us stand against child marriage and work collectively to build a society that values and protects the rights of every individual, especially our most vulnerable.

In 2013, I posted a YouTube video decrying child marriage showcasing her story and her experience in being forced into marriage contracts, which quickly went viral and prompted coverage of Yemen’s continued practice of child marriage. She managed to influence the comprehensive national dialogue conference in Yemen to pass and apply a law of criminalizing the marriage of minors under the age of 18 , and that is after launching her first video to rally the international media to denounce the marriage of minors. Below are highlights of her main not limited to her achievement during the awareness campaign she held throughout herlife:
