Alarming Increase in Child Marriage Rates Across Europe

Child marriage is a concerning issue that still persists in Europe despite efforts to combat it. According to recent statistics, it is estimated that over 115,000 children, mostly girls, are married off before the age of 18 each year in Europe. This means that every day, around 315 children are forced into marriage in the region.

In some countries, the prevalence of child marriage is particularly high. For example, in Romania, it is reported that around 11% of women aged 20-24 were married before the age of 18. In Bulgaria, this number is even higher at 17%. These statistics are alarming and shed light on the need for more action to protect children from this harmful practice.

It is important to note that child marriage not only violates a child’s basic rights but also has serious consequences for their health and well-being. Girls who are married off at a young age are more likely to experience complications during pregnancy and childbirth, and are at a higher risk of domestic violence and poverty.

Despite the concerning statistics, progress is being made in some countries to address the issue of child marriage. Laws have been enacted to increase the minimum age of marriage, and efforts are being made to raise awareness about the negative impacts of child marriage on children.

However, more needs to be done to fully eradicate child marriage in Europe. This includes strengthening enforcement of existing laws, providing support services for at-risk children, and working to change societal attitudes that enable child marriage to continue.

Overall, the statistics on child marriage in Europe serve as a stark reminder of the challenges that still exist in protecting the rights of children. It is essential that action is taken at all levels to ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, free from the harmful effects of child marriage.

In 2013, I posted a YouTube video decrying child marriage showcasing her story and her experience in being forced into marriage contracts, which quickly went viral and prompted coverage of Yemen’s continued practice of child marriage. She managed to influence the comprehensive national dialogue conference in Yemen to pass and apply a law of criminalizing the marriage of minors under the age of 18 , and that is after launching her first video to rally the international media to denounce the marriage of minors. Below are highlights of her main not limited to her achievement during the awareness campaign she held throughout herlife:
