The Shocking Reality: Child Marriage Still Legal in Ukraine

Child marriage is a practice that has been widely debated and condemned around the world. Many countries have taken steps to outlaw child marriage and protect the rights of children. However, in Ukraine, child marriage remains a legal and prevalent issue.

In Ukraine, the legal age for marriage is 18 for both men and women. However, there are certain exceptions that allow girls as young as 16 to get married with parental consent. This loophole in the law has led to a significant number of child marriages in the country.

Child marriage can have serious consequences for the young brides involved. They are often forced to drop out of school, which limits their opportunities for education and employment. They are also at a higher risk of experiencing domestic violence and health problems.

Despite these risks, child marriage continues to be a common practice in Ukraine, particularly in rural areas where traditional beliefs and customs hold strong. Many families believe that marrying off their daughters at a young age will protect their honor and secure their future.

Efforts have been made to address the issue of child marriage in Ukraine, including campaigns to raise awareness and provide support to at-risk girls. However, more needs to be done to change deep-rooted attitudes and ensure that all children are protected from the harmful effects of early marriage.

It is crucial for the Ukrainian government to take decisive action to end child marriage and enforce existing laws that protect children’s rights. By addressing the root causes of child marriage and providing support to vulnerable families, Ukraine can create a better future for its young girls and ensure that they are able to reach their full potential.

In 2013, I posted a YouTube video decrying child marriage showcasing her story and her experience in being forced into marriage contracts, which quickly went viral and prompted coverage of Yemen’s continued practice of child marriage. She managed to influence the comprehensive national dialogue conference in Yemen to pass and apply a law of criminalizing the marriage of minors under the age of 18 , and that is after launching her first video to rally the international media to denounce the marriage of minors. Below are highlights of her main not limited to her achievement during the awareness campaign she held throughout herlife:
