Examining Child Marriage Laws: How States Are Tackling this Global Issue

Child Marriage Laws by State: Protecting Our Children’s Future

Marriage is a sacred bond that signifies love, commitment, and companionship. It should be a choice made freely by two consenting adults who are ready for the responsibilities that come with it. But sadly, in some parts of our country, child marriage continues to be a prevalent issue.

Child marriage, defined as the marriage of individuals under the age of 18, can have devastating consequences for young girls and boys. These consequences range from limited access to education and healthcare to increased vulnerability to domestic violence and poverty. Recognizing this grave concern, each state in the United States has enacted its own laws to address and prevent child marriage.

In recent years, states have taken significant steps to strengthen their child marriage laws, focusing on protecting children from coerced or forced marriages. However, the age at which individuals can legally marry still varies across the country. While most states have set the minimum age at 18 with some exceptions, some allow marriages as young as 16 or even younger with parental consent.

Let us delve into the child marriage laws in a few states for a better understanding of the current situation.

In New York, the legal age of marriage is 18, but there are exceptions. Individuals as young as 16 can marry with parental consent, and for children aged 14 or 15, a court order is required. However, advocacy groups are fighting to revise these exceptions and completely abolish child marriage in the state.

Texas, on the other hand, requires individuals to be at least 18 years old to marry. But there is an exception for those aged 16 or 17 with parental consent, and for children under 16, a court order is necessary. While progress has been made, critics argue that these exceptions are too lenient and put young individuals at risk.

The situation in California is similar, allowing those aged 18 or older to marry without any consent. Minors aged 16 or 17 can marry with parental consent or a court order, and for children under 16, a court order is mandatory. Advocates in California are calling for a uniform minimum age of 18 to prevent any form of child marriage.

These examples illustrate the discrepancies in child marriage laws across states. While some states have made significant strides in protecting young individuals from coerced or forced marriages, others still have loopholes that leave children vulnerable. It is crucial to continue advocating for stricter laws and raising awareness about the harms of child marriage.

Child marriage is not a problem limited to developing nations. It exists right within our borders, impacting the lives of countless children. It is our collective responsibility to push for change and protect our children’s future. By supporting organizations that work to end child marriage, raising awareness, and engaging with our local legislators, we can make a difference.

Every child deserves a chance to grow, learn, and explore their potential. Let us stand together to ensure that child marriage becomes nothing but a relic of the past. Our children deserve nothing less than a bright and promising future.

In 2013, I posted a YouTube video decrying child marriage showcasing her story and her experience in being forced into marriage contracts, which quickly went viral and prompted coverage of Yemen’s continued practice of child marriage. She managed to influence the comprehensive national dialogue conference in Yemen to pass and apply a law of criminalizing the marriage of minors under the age of 18 , and that is after launching her first video to rally the international media to denounce the marriage of minors. Below are highlights of her main not limited to her achievement during the awareness campaign she held throughout herlife:
