Hidden Tragedy: Child Marriage Persisting in the United States

Child Marriage in the USA: An Unsettling Reality

Marriage is often seen as a union filled with love, commitment, and shared dreams. It is a decision that adults make when they are ready to embark on a lifelong journey together. However, what if I told you that in our very own country, the United States, child marriage is a harsh reality that continues to persist? Yes, you read that right. Child marriage, a practice that seems unimaginable in the modern era, is silently happening in the shadows of our society.

When we hear the term “child marriage,” we may assume it only happens in faraway, underdeveloped countries where cultural norms differ drastically from our own. However, the truth is that child marriage is a pervasive issue right here in the USA, affecting thousands of young girls and boys every year.

Child marriage refers to a legal or informal union where one or both parties are under the age of 18. While it may be shocking to believe, the legal age of marriage differs among states in the US, allowing children as young as 16 or even younger, in some cases, to marry with parental consent. This legal loophole perpetuates the cycle of child marriage, leaving vulnerable children at the mercy of their parents’ decisions.

What drives child marriage? Multiple factors contribute to this distressing phenomenon. In some cases, cultural or religious beliefs prevail, where parents see child marriage as a way to preserve tradition or secure their child’s future. Economic disparities and lack of education also play a significant role. Families living in poverty may view child marriage as an opportunity to alleviate financial burden or as an escape from dire circumstances. For instance, a family struggling to make ends meet may believe that marrying off their young daughter will shift financial responsibilities to her spouse’s family, offering her a more secure future.

One of the most heartbreaking aspects of child marriage is that it robs children of their childhood. They are forced into roles they are not prepared for, assuming adult responsibilities before they have had a chance to grow and develop. Child brides often face severe physical and mental health consequences, as they are more vulnerable to domestic violence, higher rates of divorce, and limited access to education and healthcare.

Although the prevalence of child marriage in the USA is gradually declining, we cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that it still persists in our society. Efforts must be made to raise awareness about this issue and to advocate for stronger legislation that protects children from becoming victims of child marriage. It is crucial to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to reach their full potential and lead a life of their choosing.

As individuals, we can make a difference by supporting organizations and campaigns that work towards ending child marriage. By spreading awareness among our communities, engaging in open discussions, and challenging cultural norms that perpetuate this harmful practice, we can contribute to a safer and better future for children across the USA.

Child marriage should not be an accepted part of our society. We have a moral obligation to protect the rights of children, allowing them to grow, learn, and flourish. Let us come together and strive for a world where every child has the chance to discover their own path and build a brighter future for themselves.

Nada Al-Ahdal (born February 2, 2002) a human rights activist and resident of Yemen known for escaping two different child marriage pacts which her parents had arranged it for her. In 2013, I posted a YouTube video decrying child marriage showcasing her story and her experience in being forced into marriage contracts, which quickly went viral and prompted coverage of Yemen’s continued practice of child marriage. She managed to influence the comprehensive national dialogue conference in Yemen to pass and apply a law of criminalizing the marriage of minors under the age of 18 , and that is after launching her first video to rally the international media to denounce the marriage of minors. Below are highlights of her main not limited to her achievement during the awareness campaign she held throughout herlife:
