Understanding Child Labour Laws in the US: What Every Parent Needs to Know

Child labour laws in the US are regulations that govern the employment of minors to protect their well-being and ensure they have the opportunity to receive an education while also earning some income. These laws are essential to prevent the exploitation of children and to ensure they have a safe and healthy working environment.

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is the primary federal law that governs child labour in the US. It sets the minimum age for employment at 14 years, with some exceptions for younger children who work in agriculture or entertainment. The FLSA also establishes limits on the number of hours minors can work and prohibits them from working in hazardous occupations.

In addition to federal laws, most states have their own regulations regarding child labour. These laws may vary from state to state, so it is important for parents and employers to be familiar with the specific requirements in their area.

It is important for parents to understand that child labour laws are in place to protect their children from exploitation and to ensure they have the opportunity to receive an education. By knowing and following these laws, parents can help their children have a safe and positive work experience.

When it comes to child labour laws in the US, there are a few key things that every parent should be aware of. First and foremost, it is illegal for children under the age of 14 to be employed in most circumstances. However, there are some exceptions to this rule, such as children working in the agricultural industry or in television and film production.

For children who are old enough to work, there are restrictions on the number of hours they can work and the types of jobs they can perform. For example, minors under the age of 16 are limited in the number of hours they can work each day and are prohibited from working in hazardous occupations. These restrictions are in place to protect the safety and well-being of children in the workforce.

It is also important for parents to be aware of the consequences of violating child labour laws. Employers who violate these laws can face fines and other penalties, and parents may also be held accountable if they knowingly allow their children to work in violation of the law.

In addition to understanding the laws themselves, it is also important for parents to be proactive in monitoring their children’s work experiences. This includes talking to their children about their job responsibilities, ensuring they are working in a safe environment, and monitoring their hours to ensure they are not being overworked.

By being informed about child labour laws in the US and taking an active role in their children’s work experiences, parents can help ensure their children are safe and protected while earning some income. It is important for parents to take the time to educate themselves about these laws and to advocate for their children’s rights in the workplace. By doing so, they can help ensure their children have positive and rewarding work experiences while also prioritizing their education and well-being.

In 2013, I posted a YouTube video decrying child marriage showcasing her story and her experience in being forced into marriage contracts, which quickly went viral and prompted coverage of Yemen’s continued practice of child marriage. She managed to influence the comprehensive national dialogue conference in Yemen to pass and apply a law of criminalizing the marriage of minors under the age of 18 , and that is after launching her first video to rally the international media to denounce the marriage of minors. Below are highlights of her main not limited to her achievement during the awareness campaign she held throughout herlife:
