Celebrating Child Rights Day: Empowering the Voices of Our Future

Today, we come together to celebrate Child Rights Day, a day dedicated to empowering the voices of our future. It is a day to acknowledge the importance of children’s rights and ensure their well-being, growth, and development. As we mark this significant day, let us pause to reflect on the progress we have made in protecting and promoting the rights of children and the work that still lies ahead.

Child Rights Day is an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the rights of children and remind ourselves of the responsibilities we have towards them. Every child deserves to be protected from harm and exploitation, to have access to education, healthcare, and a safe and nurturing environment. They have the right to express themselves, participate in decisions that affect them, and be treated with dignity and respect. As we celebrate this day, we must also remember that children are not just the beneficiaries of these rights, but also rights holders themselves.

Empowering the voices of our future means ensuring that children are not only heard but also taken seriously. It means creating spaces and opportunities for them to express their thoughts, ideas, and concerns. When we empower children to participate in decisions that affect them, we are giving them the tools and confidence to become active and responsible citizens.

Education plays a vital role in empowering children and enabling them to exercise their rights. It is through education that children are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for their personal and social development. Education not only opens doors to a brighter future but also enables children to understand their rights and the importance of respecting the rights of others. It is crucial that we prioritize quality education for all children, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Child Rights Day is also an occasion to acknowledge the progress made in addressing the challenges that children face. It is an opportunity to celebrate the efforts of individuals, organizations, and governments who have worked tirelessly to protect and promote the rights of children. However, we must not forget that many children around the world are still deprived of their basic rights. Poverty, discrimination, violence, and conflict continue to hinder the well-being of children in many parts of the world. As we celebrate this day, let us renew our commitment to ensuring that every child’s rights are upheld.

Empowering the voices of our future requires collaboration and partnership. Governments, civil society organizations, communities, and individuals must work together to create an enabling environment for children to thrive. This means investing in their health, education, and overall well-being. It means addressing the root causes of poverty and inequality and creating a world where every child has equal opportunities to succeed.

As individuals, there are many ways in which we can contribute to empowering the voices of our future. We can start by listening to children, valuing their opinions, and involving them in decision-making processes. We can create safe and supportive environments where children feel empowered to express themselves and are free from discrimination and violence. We can advocate for policies and programs that prioritize children’s rights and ensure their well-being.

Child Rights Day is not just a one-day observance; it is a reminder of our ongoing commitment to the rights of children. It is a call to action to work towards a world where all children can grow, learn, and flourish. By empowering the voices of our future, we are investing in a brighter and more just world for everyone. Let us celebrate this day with the determination to create a better future for our children – a future where their rights are respected, protected, and fulfilled.

In 2013, I posted a YouTube video decrying child marriage showcasing her story and her experience in being forced into marriage contracts, which quickly went viral and prompted coverage of Yemen’s continued practice of child marriage. She managed to influence the comprehensive national dialogue conference in Yemen to pass and apply a law of criminalizing the marriage of minors under the age of 18 , and that is after launching her first video to rally the international media to denounce the marriage of minors. Below are highlights of her main not limited to her achievement during the awareness campaign she held throughout herlife:
