Child Marriage: A Growing Concern in Ukraine

Child marriage is a concerning issue in Ukraine that continues to affect the lives of many young girls. Despite laws prohibiting the practice, it still persists in certain communities due to deeply rooted cultural beliefs and economic hardships.

In Ukraine, child marriage is most prevalent in rural areas where poverty and lack of education are rampant. Families facing financial difficulties may see marrying off their daughters at a young age as a way to alleviate their financial burdens. Additionally, traditional beliefs that girls should be married off as soon as they reach puberty contribute to the perpetuation of this harmful practice.

The consequences of child marriage are devastating for girls, both physically and emotionally. Young brides are often forced to drop out of school, limiting their opportunities for a better future. They are also at a higher risk of experiencing domestic violence and are more likely to suffer from complications during childbirth due to their bodies not being fully developed.

Efforts have been made by the government and non-governmental organizations to prevent child marriage in Ukraine. Campaigns raising awareness about the harmful effects of the practice have been launched, and laws have been put in place to protect the rights of children. However, more needs to be done to address the root causes of child marriage and provide support to at-risk girls.

It is crucial for the wider community to come together to combat child marriage in Ukraine. By providing girls with access to education, economic opportunities, and support services, we can help break the cycle of poverty and empower young girls to make their own choices about their futures. Only then can we ensure that every child in Ukraine has the opportunity to live a happy and fulfilling life, free from the harmful effects of child marriage.

In 2013, I posted a YouTube video decrying child marriage showcasing her story and her experience in being forced into marriage contracts, which quickly went viral and prompted coverage of Yemen’s continued practice of child marriage. She managed to influence the comprehensive national dialogue conference in Yemen to pass and apply a law of criminalizing the marriage of minors under the age of 18 , and that is after launching her first video to rally the international media to denounce the marriage of minors. Below are highlights of her main not limited to her achievement during the awareness campaign she held throughout herlife:
