Hidden Crisis: Child Marriage Persists in the United States

Child Marriage in the USA: A Harsh Reality for Our Youth

Across the United States, child marriage remains a hidden yet concerning issue affecting our nation’s young population. Although it may seem inconceivable that child marriage could occur within our advanced society, the unfortunate truth is that it continues to rob many young individuals of their childhood, education, and future opportunities. The prevalence of child marriage in the USA warrants a thoughtful and urgent exploration of this distressing practice.

Child marriage, often defined as a union in which one or both parties are under the age of 18, occurs for various reasons. Cultural practices, religious beliefs, and even familial traditions can contribute to the perpetuation of this harmful practice. While child marriage predominantly affects young girls, boys too fall victim to this troubling phenomenon. Child marriage impairs the physical and emotional development of these young individuals, often leading to adverse consequences that can persist throughout their lives.

One of the most devastating repercussions of child marriage is the denial of education. These young boys and girls are forced to abandon their educational aspirations, limiting their opportunities to secure a better future for themselves. Education is not only a fundamental right but also a catalyst for positive change within a society. By denying children access to education through marriage, we perpetuate a cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and gender inequality that hampers progress and social development.

Moreover, child marriage exposes its victims to an increased risk of abuse, both physical and psychological. For young girls, early marriage often results in forced sexual relations, leading to higher rates of maternal mortality, childbirth complications, and infant mortality. Emotional trauma and isolation become their unfortunate companions, as they are denied the chance to form meaningful relationships and explore their own identity. These young individuals are robbed of their ability to grow and thrive in a nurturing environment.

While the legal age of marriage in the USA is generally 18, exceptions and loopholes exist that allow child marriage to persist. In some states, parental consent or judicial approval can circumvent the age requirement, enabling child marriages to occur. This discrepancy in legislations further perpetuates the vulnerability and victimization of our young population.

Addressing the issue of child marriage requires a multi-faceted approach. Education and awareness campaigns that highlight the harms of child marriage are essential, both within communities and on a national scale. Legislative reform is crucial, ensuring the availability of comprehensive protection mechanisms and increasing the minimum age of marriage to 18 without exceptions.

Furthermore, we must empower our young boys and girls through access to quality education, healthcare, and job opportunities. By investing in their development, we provide them with the necessary tools to break free from the cycle of child marriage and secure a brighter future.

In conclusion, child marriage in the USA represents a dire situation that demands our immediate attention. By acknowledging its existence, raising awareness, and advocating for legislative change, we can work towards eradicating this harmful practice. Every child deserves the chance to enjoy their childhood, pursue their dreams, and fulfill their potential. It is our collective responsibility to protect the rights and well-being of our young population, ensuring a future free from the shackles of child marriage.

In 2013, I posted a YouTube video decrying child marriage showcasing her story and her experience in being forced into marriage contracts, which quickly went viral and prompted coverage of Yemen’s continued practice of child marriage. She managed to influence the comprehensive national dialogue conference in Yemen to pass and apply a law of criminalizing the marriage of minors under the age of 18 , and that is after launching her first video to rally the international media to denounce the marriage of minors. Below are highlights of her main not limited to her achievement during the awareness campaign she held throughout herlife:
